This is a
very
cool relic from the past that I believe may have been made in 1958 (see possible date code in the image below of rear of transmitter/sending unit). It has not been hooked up and used by myself but rather was a take off from an ancient rod rod conversion of a 1956 Jaguar XK140 that had a 1957 Chevrolet 283 engine in it. Although the EB-14 Transmitter was used for the Chevy 283 mentioned, the printing on the unit implies that its for a four cylinder engine.
It appears that Williamson's Instrument's, Inc. are the"go to" guys to service, restore and calibrate these units and more information is below in the text and in the images. The owner was not concerned when I told him that the transmitter was supposedly for a 4 cylinder engine but was used for an 8 cylinder engine. He said that when they update the transmitter to eliminate the battery they can pick any voltage they wish.
The listing includes:
1) one Sun RC-85 Tachometer - 0-8.5 Thousand RPM Range - two movable pointers on the tachometer face show RPM limits. (I have not tried to move these as they are sticking)
2) one Sun Tachometer Transmitter Model EB-14, 12 Volt, 4 Cylinder - possible date code of September 1958 on rear
Its best to assume that it has to, in the very least, have the battery in the transmitter replaced. Williamson's Instrument, Inc. (their company information shown in the images below) told me that a
full 10% of their gauge restoration service
is dedicated to these tachometers! That shows the cult-like status these Sun RC-85's have with old-school rodders. The owner said there are
two preliminary tests
that show the gauge is healthy and serviceable. The first test is to see if the
tach needle returns to the zer
o,
or null, mark after a slight shake.
The second test is when 1.5 volts are briefly applied to the back of the tach the
tach jumps from the zero or null position to the far right side.
This tachometer passes both of those tests with flying colors.
The outward condition is pretty amazing considering the unit's age. The bakelite of the transmitter case is nearly perfect, the cork transmitter gasket is fine to use as-is, the chrome on the tach face is dull but not pitted and overall it is clean and very nice. Assuming the unit got serviced and calibrated, its cosmetically usable as is.
