Scouting for Girls
The Official Handbook of the Girl Scouts
First Abridged Edition, Second Printing (1927)
DESCRIPTION: Founded in Georgia as the "Girl Guides" in 1912 by Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low, after meeting Boy Scouts founder Robert Baden-Powell the year previously, the group changed its name to the "Girl Scouts of the United States" and incorporated in 1913. Seven years later it published its first handbook, which in subsequent updates grew to a massive 600 pages; that's why this abridged edition was assembled in 1927 with a flexible hard cover, to make it easier to bring the guidebook out on hikes and camping trips. This particular copy seems to be from the second printing ("First Reprint," December 1927), with the original 1927 cover design that was changed just three years later. Packed with astounding illustrations and black-and-white photos, this is a delightful and moving gift for any current or graduated Scout in your life, priced modestly today to encourage an actual sale to a Scouting enthusiast.
CONDITION: Text: Very Good Minus (VG-). In remarkable condition for being 90 years old and having been carried around in the woods by small girls for years. Other than a quarter-inch rip in the top spine, the only other wear and tear is small bumping on the edges. Book's original owner, Josephine B. Willis, has written her name in pencil on the “This Book Belongs To” page, and drawn an American flag on the inner front cover. Issued without a dust jacket.
PROVENANCE: Acquired by CCLaP at Open Books, Chicago, 2017.
